"the shapes arise!"

I INVITE YOU TO follow my journey and watch how the shapes arise.

MEET THE ARTIST

“I saw an artist on a PBS special who created bas relief murals on the walls of his client's homes. I thought it would be interesting to be able to build a 3D tree on a wall in your home, with a branch diving into the wall, and then having it reappear around the corner on an adjoining wall. So I built a moveable easel in my garage and tried to figure out how to do it.”

Carol’s artistic journey began in childhood when a simple drawing of her brother’s baseball glove earned unexpected praise from her teacher, sparking a lifelong passion for visual storytelling. She initially pursued performing arts in college, but returned several years later to pursue a BFA in computer graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology.  Despite a diverse career in graphic design, sales, and owning a virtual assistant business, her love for tactile, hands-on creation never faded.

Her passion for plaster work, sparked by a PBS special she’d seen years earlier on a Chicago artist who created plaster landscape murals, never left her. This desire to create in three dimensions stayed with her, driving her to revisit plaster in 2021 when she serendipitously received an email about a bas-relief class from an artist she had contacted years earlier.

Today, Carol’s work is a testament to her belief that art should make people think and evoke a sense of discovery.  Her nature-inspired bas-reliefs are not just decorative pieces, but windows into a world where every petal, feather, and leaf tells a story, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface.

Carol’s work is exhibited in her Greensboro home studio and gallery, and at the Gallery at Grandover in Greensboro, NC. She also travels the East Coast and Midwest, showcasing her art in juried festivals. You can also find her on Instagram at Carol_K_Art.

THE PROCESS

Bringing an idea to life through art begins long before the first stroke is made.

Inspiration can strike in the smallest of moments—a shadow dancing across a wall, the texture of weathered stone, or the quiet stillness of dawn. For Julian Arlen, the process is one of observation and patience, waiting for the right alignment of light, emotion, and space.

Every composition is a deliberate act, balancing form and feeling. Whether behind the lens or standing before a canvas, Julian crafts pieces that invite reflection and connection. These works become more than visual—they become experiences that resonate deeply, offering viewers a chance to pause, feel, and rediscover the beauty hidden in the everyday.
